Thirty-hour crossbow siege comes to an end in Stoke

A 30-hour siege which started after a man reportedly threatened health visitors with a crossbow has ended.

Armed police were called to a flat in the Chell Heath area of Stoke-on-Trent at 2.20pm on Thursday.

The stand-off lasted through the night and most of Friday before a 33-year-old man was detained willingly under the Mental Health Act at approximately 8.50pm.

Staffordshire Police said he was taken to hospital, while officers are now searching the property. No-one is understood to have been hurt during the incident.

Chief Inspector John Owen, commander for the Stoke North local policing team, said: "The professionalism of our officers means this situation has resolved itself peacefully and without incident.

"I would like to thank the local community in Chell Heath for their support and patience."
