False moves

Two newspapers were in dispute over rights to stage the world chess championship between Nigel Short and Garry Kasparov. A claim by the Times that its pounds 1.7m bid had been accepted was denied by London's Evening Standard, part of a pounds 2m bid by the London Chess group.
