Toddler dies in Salford hotel car park after being hit by vehicle in 'truly tragic accident'
The 17-month-old boy died at the scene, police say
A 17-month-old boy has died after being hit by a vehicle in a hotel car park in a "truly tragic accident".
Armed forces who were on patrol in the area were the first to respond to reports of a collision involving the young boy and rushed to the Ibis Hotel in Trafford Road, Salford Quays, Greater Manchester on Thursday night.
Emergency services were called but the toddler died at the scene, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed.
Witnesses reported a heavy police presence at the scene, ambulances and around 15 police cars outside the hotel.
The GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are investigating, but said it was an accident and nothing suspicious had been found.
Police Sergeant Brian Orr said: "This was a heartbreaking incident involving a young boy which has understandably left his family distraught and the thoughts of everyone at the SCIU are with them at this terrible time.
"At this moment this appears to have been a truly tragic accident and not a suspicious incident, however we have launched an investigation to establish full understanding of exactly what happened.
"I would ask that anybody who witnesses the collision to please contact police."
Anyone with information should contact the SCIU on 0161 856 4747 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
