Dealer accused of smuggling guns faces US extradition

A British arms dealer can be extradited to the United States to stand trial for allegedly smuggling weapons, a court has ruled.

Public-school educated Guy Savage, pictured, owns Sabre Defence Industries, which has divisions in the US and the UK. He was arrested in February during a raid at his £800,000 home in Pinner, Middlesex.

An arsenal of weapons, including assault rifles and ammunition was found there and at Mr Savage's business premises in Northolt. He is accused of smuggling weapons to Iraq and the Middle East and faces a 21-count indictment in the United States. If found guilty on the more serious charges he faces 20 years in prison and a $1m (£600,000) fine.

Westminster magistrates' court heard Mr Savage, who denies the allegations, convinced a psychiatrist he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. District judge Nicholas Evans said the 42-year-old's claim to have attempted suicide was "uncorroborated".

Theresa May, the Home Secretary, has the last word on his extradition and a final decision could take months.
