Leicester City supporters get so drunk en masse hospital has to warn them to stay away

Party-weary Leicester fans are told to go home and call NHS111 as the city's casualty department is inundated with alcohol-related injuries.

Doctors in Leicester have called on football fans to stay at home after the city’s A&E department was overwhelmed with drunken revellers.

Leicester Royal Infirmary saw twice as many patients with alcohol-related minor injuries than expected on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

The spike in admissions became so severe hospital bosses were forced to take to social media this morning to try and stem the flow.

@Leic_Hospital tweeted: "@Leic_Hospital is feeling the effect of the @LCFC game yesterday.

"If you don't need to come in to A&E please don't."

Leicester football fans took to the streets to celebrate after the city’s football team topped the Premier League against all odds.

The team knew the title was theirs on Monday after their closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur drew 2-2 with Chelsea.

However, the city faced the mother of all hangovers this morning as A&E staff struggled to deal with double the number of normal drink-related admissions.

A Leicester Hospital spokeswoman said by 9am this morning casualty staff had treated more than 90 patients for alcohol-related injuries.

She added: "Last night and this morning we have seen twice as many patients in our Emergency Department than we would normally on a Saturday night/Sunday morning.

"The majority are being treated for minor injuries or alcohol related incidents.

"We expected it to be incredibly busy this weekend and have the necessary plans in place to safely treat our patients.

"A plea is for those who do not need to come into A&E to call NHS 111 for healthcare advice."

Leicester City FC, known as the Foxes, began their campaign for the title as 5,000-1 outsiders after narrowly escaping relegation at the end of last season.

And their chances of winning appeared so slim last December Match of the Day presenter and former Leicester player Gary Lineker claimed he would present the programme in his underwear if the Foxes won the Premier League.

Prime Minister David Cameron, speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, has called on Mr Lineker to stick to his word.
