Gina Miller named Britain's most influential black person

Anti-Brexit campaigner tops the 2018 Power List which celebrates the African and African Caribbean community

Anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller has been named the UK’s most influential black person.

The 52-year-old campaigner led the successful legal challenge which forced Theresa May to get Parliament’s approval before triggering Article 50 in March.

She topped the 2018 Powerlist of 100 people, which recognises people in the UK of African and African Caribbean heritage who are rated on their “ability to change lives and alter events”.

Other nominees included British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, boxer Anthony Joshua and musician Stormzy.

The names were chosen by an independent panel which included former High Court judge Dame Linda Dobbs and former Apprentice winner Tim Campbell.

Ms Miller, who is originally from Guyana, joined other big names who have previously topped the Powerlist, including former children’s laureate Malorie Blackman, philanthropist Mo Ibrahim, architect David Adjaye and Baroness Patricia Scotland.

The activist said she received racist and sexist abuse as a result of her campaign against a hard Brexit, which resulted in a Supreme Court judgement against the Government in January.

She said she had been "shocked" by the level of abuse she suffered online and called on people in "positions of power" to do more to help.

The activist said there was a period when she was unable to travel on public transport or go out with her family at the weekends due to the death and rape threats she received after the initial High Court challenge last November.

In July, a viscount was sentenced to 12 weeks for posting abusive messages about her online – offering money to the first person who ran over Ms Miller, who he called a “boat jumper”, and said she should be sent back “to the stinking jungle”.
