Salary: Sponsorship deals and appearance fees will bring him more than pounds 1m this year. They include a pounds 500,000 two-year deal with Puma sportswear.

Hours: Three to six hours' training every day except for two weeks' holiday.

Educated: Canberra Primary School, White City, and Wandsworth Technical College, London.

Perks: His current sponsors include Lucozade, Toyota, High and Mighty clothing group and a banana- promotion company, which all provide free products. Incentives and rewards for winning championships can vary: for winning the World Championship 100m in Stuttgart in 1993, he received a new Mercedes, and this year stood to gain an appearance fee of pounds 100,000 by competing against Leroy Burrell. He also co-owns the sports agency Nuff Respect, as a commercial back-up to his sprinting, thus saving himself agent's fees, which can amount to more than half of a sportsman's earnings.
