A 21-year-old woman is critically ill in hospital after taking a "legal high" substance.
The woman was admitted to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary after falling ill in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Police officers believe that she bought the substance from a takeaway shop called Happy Chippy. Detective Chief Inspector Ian Bentham said: "Police are also issuing advice to anyone else who may have bought 'legal high'-type substances from the Happy Chippy not to consume them, and to contact the police. We do not want anyone else to become ill."
The woman is described as being in a critical-but-stable condition. She collapsed in the street, yards away from the entrance of the takeaway shop. Officers are investigating to establish exactly what drugs the woman took. Police do not yet know what form the substance was in.
Det Ch Insp Bentham said: "She has apparently purchased a legal high at the shop and, within 100 yards of having taken it and leaving the premises, has collapsed."
He added: "We need to make sure nobody else falls ill."
