London taxi driver furious at police for blowing up his car after terror scare near Gherkin
Cab driver had reportedly left his car in the City over the weekend when it broke down
A London taxi driver is reportedly furious after police blew up his vehicle when it sparked a terror scare near the Gherkin building.
The driver reportedly left his silver cab on a rank in the City of London over the weekend when it broke down.
When he went to retrieve his car, he found it had been blown up by anti-terror police in a controlled explosion. The blast shattered the rear window of the vehicle and damaged the back end, The Evening Standard reports, as well as the windows of a nearby pub.
A witness told The Standard police were looking at the vehicle and shining torches into it early on Monday morning.
“There was an electronic device that had lights flashing on it and the police evacuated the area at about 6.50am and blew it up an hour later.”
Another witness said the driver was “livid” after returning to find his car had been blown up.
“He was very angry and told two PCSOs he was going to sue the police. He had the car towed to a garage and went with it,” the witness said.
A City of London Police spokesman said officers were called at approximately 7am on Monday to a "suspect vehicle" in St Mary Axe.
Their statement said: “Officers attended and a cordon was put in place. The vehicle has since been removed. The cordons have since been lifted.
“We would urge motorists that breakdown in the City of London to contact police on 101 if they are unable to get their vehicle recovered.”
