Two people died in a motorway collision today, police said.

The accident occurred on the M1 in Buckinghamshire, between junctions 14 and 13 southbound, shortly after 5am.

A white Ford Transit van was involved in a collision with a white Iveco lorry.

Thames Valley Police said two unnamed occupants of the van died at the scene.

The main southbound carriageway is closed as officers investigate the cause of the collision

"The hard shoulder is being used to try to ease congestion but there are lengthy tailbacks and motorists are advised to avoid the area," a spokesman said.

Police said the motorway has now reopened.
