An elderly woman has died after her car hit another vehicle as she drove on the wrong side of the road, according to police.

The pensioner's red Peugeot 205 was in collision with a green Volkswagen Golf on the A40 Western Avenue, near Denham, Buckinghamshire, at 4.40am today.

The Peugeot driver, from Surrey, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male driver of the Golf, in his mid-30s, was taken to Hillingdon Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "It is believed that the Peugeot was travelling the wrong way along the carriageway at the time of the collision."
