Police were today investigating how a pensioner accidentally ran over and killed his wife on the driveway of their home.

Colin Dickinson, 85, was reversing his black Mercedes E270 automatic saloon when the incident happened.

He and his wife Doreen, 84, were preparing to go out for the afternoon when she was struck by the vehicle.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision on a driveway on Halifax Road, Sheffield.

It is thought Mrs Dickinson was pushed into a brick wall by the car, which carried on through the wall and into the next door property's drive.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said the woman was fatally injured in the accident on Tuesday afternoon.

Paramedics were unable to save the pensioner and she was pronounced dead at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.

A police spokesman said: "An investigation is underway but at this stage it appears to be a tragic accident.

"Anyone who saw what happened is asked please to ring the victim helpline."

Mr Dickinson was too upset to comment.
