The north and west of the UK has been told to prepare for more snow ahead of two more days of icy weather.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for most of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and northern England.

Snow and difficult driving conditions are on the way, the weather forecaster said.

The gloomy conditions are a stark contrast to the sunny but crisp skies in most of the south east of England and London.

East Anglia, the south coast of Wales, and the east of Scotland should also escape the wintry weather.

The warning covers Monday and Tuesday but it set to be lifted on Wednesday, unless there is a change of circumstances.

The forecaster revealed last week that Britain has experienced its sunniest winter since 1929 – almost a century ago.

Statistics released by the Met Office show that 2015 had already surpassed 2001’s 189 hours of sunshine by 25 of February.

A spokesperson for the Met Office told the Independent that the weather was “not unusual” and “pretty typical” for this time of year and that the north and west of the country tended to experience colder weather.

Some colder nights ahead were to be expected during the “transitional period” between the end of “meteorological winter “and the coming “meteorological spring”, the spokesperson added.
