Scotland's most popular baby names revealed

More than 500 Jacks and 460 Emilys were born this year, according to the National Records of Scotland

Jack and Emily have been revealed as the most popular baby names in Scotland, with Jack being the favourite for the eighth consecutive year in a row.

Data from the National Records of Scotland show 516 boys were named Jack this year, while Oliver rose two places from 2014 to second place with 403 boys registered under the name.

Other boys’ names in the top 10 included James, Lewis, Alexander, Charlie and Logan.

The fastest climbers within the boys’ top twenty were Jacob, Alexander and Finlay.

Noah, one of the most popular boys’ names last year, fell seven places out of the most popular 10. Cameron, Ethan and Max all dropped out of the top 20.

Emily has been the most popular girls’ name for the past two years and was given to 468 babies this year. It was followed by Sophie, Olivia, Isla and Ava, in exactly the same order as 2014.

Anna, up 4 places to 16th, was the fastest riser within the girls’ top 20 and Emma moved up three places to 15th.

Names with clear falls popularity included Holly and Molly, which bothe fell by 11 places in the list.

This year, the number of unique names chosen by parents were "well above" the levels of 10, 20 or 40 years ago, according to NRS.

The births of 25,970 boys and 24,490 girls were registered in the period covered by the figures.

Earlier this year, Oliver and Amelia were revealed as the most popular baby names in England and Wales for the second year in a row.
