A serving Metropolitan Police officer is due to appear in court today charged with child sex offences.

PC John Wigglesworth, a member of the Roads and Transport policing command in London, is scheduled to appear at Redbridge Magistrates Court charged with two counts of rape and two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child.

Mr Wigglesworth was arrested at his home on Tuesday and charged later that day.

Scotland Yard have said he was not on duty at the time of his arrest and he had been suspended.

The Directorate of Professional Standards has also been informed “as a matter of course”.

The offences are alleged to have been taken place between 2008 and 2010.
