UK weather: Britons to experience chilly conditions as temperatures plunge

Conditions will get drier in second half of the week

Conditions in the UK will be particularly cold on Tuesday in what is expected to be a chilly week, forecasters have said. 

Temperatures will struggle to get much above 10C, making Tuesday a cool day even for this time of year.

Alex Deakin, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “It’s going to feel cold most days this week but probably particularly cold on Tuesday thanks to a brisk and rather fresh wind blowing.”

The wind will also blow plenty of showers across the UK throughout the day. 

A zone of wet weather will spiral into north-east England and Scotland on Tuesday morning before reaching the north-west of the UK later in the day, and another area of rain will reach East Anglia and south-east England in the mid-afternoon. 

Some places including the Highlands and parts of central England will avoid the downpours and will largely stay dry and bright. 

However, these areas will also feel the cold. “Even if you’ve got some sunny spells, we’re going to struggle to reach the teens,” Mr Deakin said. 

Temperatures will feel cooler though where it’s “dull and damp" and the wind will make it feel “more like 8 or 9 C” on Tuesday afternoon, he added. 

The picture for Wednesday is also one of sunshine and showers, with East Anglia and south-east England anticipated to see lots of showers. 

The wind will ease slightly though and temperatures will rise to around 14C in London and the south-west of England. 

The second half of the week is expected to be drier, according to the Met Office.
