Tube strike: Two further 24-hour underground strikes announced for August

London Underground workers are due to stage two more 24 hour strikes in August, the RMT union announced on Tuesday - claiming it's members had "no option but to strike again."

The strikes, announced on Tuesday by RMT, are due to take place from 6.30pm on 25th August and from 6.30pm on 27th August. Each is scheduled to last 24 hours.

Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) members are downing tools over the implementation of a 24 hour Tube service across selected lines - a system London Mayor Boris Johnson previously claimed would start from 12 September.

"Staff are angry that their grievances are being ignored and dismissed by both the Mayor and his officials and that there has been no substantial move as of today from London Underground to make progress towards a negotiated settlement," Mick Cash, leader of the RMT, claimed.

"That is why we have no option but to strike again. It is ridiculous that the job cuts programme for fleet, engineering and station staff is also still being bulldozed through against this background," he added.

It follows from fresh talks over the proposed action with three further unions - Aslef, TSSA and Unite - over their members shift arrangements for the Night Tube. Union leaders have called for the implementation of the service to be delayed.

"London Underground and the Mayor are sending out conflicting messages to the public over the start date for Night Tube," Mr Cash said.

But Steve Griffiths, London Underground's (LU) chief operating officer, claimed his organisation had made an "extremely fair offer" and that they were "prepared to be flexible to reshape it to best suit our staff. "

The announced action follows a 24 hour strike last week that saw millions of London commuters struggle into work as the entire Underground system closed.
