McDonald's denounced as 'too ghetto' by unhappy customers in Surrey

A McDonald's in Surrey with an apparently street-wise new look has been denounced as too "ghetto" for the area.

After a two-week closure for improvements, customers reacted with dismay to fake graffiti covering the walls inside the revamped fast-food restaurant in Redhill, the Surrey Mirror has reported.

They accused the food giant of glorifying graffiti and "insulting" residents with a factory-style look that was not in keeping with the regeneration of the town.

Some commentators said they thought builders had forgotten to put the wallpaper back on.

As well as graffiti, there were metal rivets in the walls and paint on the tables.

One commentator said the restaurant now appeared to resemble a crime scene.

Another commentator said the new look was out of keeping with Redhill's drive to become more upmarket.

Writing on the Surrey Mirror's Facebook page, meanwhile, one customer said she had mistaken the new refurbishment for unfinished work.

"The design is awful. Me and my friend thought the wallpaper was stripped off!" wrote Fi Godfrey.

But the fast-food giant has said customers have congratulated them on their style-choice and it would not be changing.

"We were surprised to hear this feedback, as the restaurant team have received many compliments about the recent refurbishment.

"These refreshed designs have been used across the UK and have been very well received."

Other complaints centred on the new hi-tech iPads for taking orders, with customers complaining they preferred speaking to a real person at the cashier.

Revamping the Surrey town centre has stalled after the regeneration firm in charge collapsed this summer, the Surrey Mirror reported at the time.
