Transport ministers are trying out 'new patterns' of travelling to work

Trending on Twitter yesterday: an unlikely YouTube clip courtesy of the Department of Transport. "The Government is aiming to positively change its travel by 50 per cent during the Olympics to help manage demand on the capital's transport system," it announces.

And "Operation StepChange" is being trialled first by Transport ministers, who are trying out "new patterns" of travelling to work – as this cheap-as-chips public-service video records. For instance, the MP Mike Penning left home at 6.15am, or so he claims to camera outside the Commons. A noble sacrifice.

Secretary of State Justine Greening took the dramatic step of getting to a Cabinet meeting on foot! "Across the whole department we're trying to re-route, re-mode, re-time and reduce our travel, so I'm re-moding at the moment." (Re-mode?! Nope. Me neither)

A breathless Francis Maude cycled to Downing Street. "You feel great afterwards," he wheezed. Ah, the spirit of the Games. Watch: ind.pn/DoTvid
