On Monday night MPs voted without debate to cut tax credits for an estimated 800,000 people.

The Chancellor George Osborne had previously indicated that he was cancelling his tax credit cuts – however a little-known element worth £1 billion by 2020 is still going ahead.

The 272- 228 vote reduced the so-called “income disregard” from £5,000 to £2,500.

The change reduces the amount a claimant’s income can increase in a year before their claim is reassessed.

Hundreds of thousands of low income workers are expected to have to pay back some or all of their tax credits as a result of the change.

Labour’s John McDonnell said the Tories were saying one thing and doing another, while a Treasury spokesperson said the cuts were fair and “common sense”.
