A third of gay voters now back Tories, poll finds

Tory support among the gay community has soared since David Cameron backed same-sex marriage, according to a poll.

Some 30 per cent of those surveyed by PinkNews.co.uk said they would now vote Conservative - compared to just 11 per cent at the last general election.

Mr Cameron was also the most popular choice as Prime Minister, with 46 per cent saying they wanted him in Number 10 against 37 per cent endorsing Labour leader Ed Miliband and 17 per cent Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg.

PinkNews has been tracking the voting intentions of 724 members of the gay community, selected to be demographically and geographically representative, since 2010.

Publisher Benjamin Cohen said: "It is clear that David Cameron's strong support for same-sex marriage, despite loud opposition from within his party, has been recognised by the gay community, although this hasn't necessarily translated into support for the Conservative Party."
