The Tory MP for Canterbury, Julian Brazier, called last night for a public inquiry before ministers agreed to the start of production at the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (Thorp) in Cumbria. Although the go-ahead is imminent, he warned that it could lead to nuclear proliferation.
