Jeremy Corbyn attacks Theresa May over private healthcare in PMQs

Theresa May was accused of being "too weak" to sack her Health Secretary as warnings over the NHS winter crisis dominated the first Prime Minister's Questions of the year.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn focused all six of his questions on challenges in the health service, after hospitals were told to defer around 55,000 routine operations and potentially millions of outpatient appointments to free up capacity for the sickest patients.

He also mocked Ms May for failing to get rid of Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, who was widely thought to be in line for a move during the reshuffle but kept his job, and expanded his remit, after reportedly refusing to budge.

The two-day reshuffle - aimed at ridding her top team of its “pale, male and stale” image - saw a raft of new MPs promoted to junior ministerial positions. However Ms May’s efforts to shake up the top tier stalled when senior ministers, including Mr Hunt and Justine Greening, until then the Education Secretary, declined other jobs.

MPs also debated opposition day motions on the NHS and the railways, while Labour’s motion demanding that the Government releases extra cash to combat the crisis passed in the Commons without a vote.

Brexiteers have presented EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier with a hamper to showcase the best of British produce.

Former trade minister and ex-CBI chief Digby Jones, MEP Steven Woolfe, Leave Means Leave co-chairman John Longworth and Labour Leave chairman John Mills went to Brussels for the meeting, where they presented him with a jar of Marmite, PG Tips tea and a volume of Shakespeare.

Critics rather unkindly pointed out that Marmite and PG Tips are made by Unilever - a half Dutch firm.

Pollster Britain Elects finds that 63 per cent of people disapprove of the way the Government is carrying out the Brexit negotiations.

Pro-EU MP Stephen Doughty, who backs the Open Britain campaign, said the whole approach had been "utterly shambolic from the start and the British people know it."

Former Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron has said he regrets saying that gay sex was not a sin after he was repeated asked to clarify his views during the election.

In an interview with a Christian radio station, Mr Farron said he felt "isolated" during the furore around his Christian beliefs, which dominated much of his election campaign.

In the Commons, MPs are debating a Labour motion calling for the Government to "increase cash limits for the current year" so hospitals can reschedule elective operations.

Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth accused Tories who claimed the winter crisis was "not predictable" and "not preventable" of a "hubristic response".

"This winter crisis was entirely predictable and entirely preventable," he said.

He added: "This is not just a winter crisis. This is an all year round funding crisis, a year round staffing crisis, a year round social care crisis, a year round health inequality crisis - manufactured in Downing Street by this Government."

He questioned why Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt was still in post, telling the Commons: "Isn't the truth that doctors and nurses have lost confidence in him, patients have lost confidence in him, the Prime Minister it seems has lost confidence in him.

But Mr Hunt warned attempts to "politicise" the pressures on the NHS are a "serious mistake".

He said: "The last time the NHS had a really difficult flu winter was 2009, and (Mr Ashworth) might know that as he was working in Downing Street at the time."

Mr Hunt said then shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley refused to attack the Labour government as it was an operational issue.

Mr Hunt went on: "Andy Burnham, who was the health secretary, actually thanked him for his measured tone so that together we can give a reassuring message to the public.

"Sadly, I cannot say that today."

Pity poor MPs - and journalists - in the Palace of Westminster, as a burst water main has meant almost all the toilets are not working.

Back in the Commons, Labour's Paula Sherriff said patients were being treated with "no dignity" as a result of funding cutbacks.

She said: "I've heard stories from local hospitals in recent days which include six patients squeezed into four bed bays, with no curtains and no dignity as a result, no lockers and no bells.

"They're actually being given hand bells or told to ask the patient next to them to ring the bell should there be an emergency."

Shadow health minister Justin Madders, wrapping up the debate, told an awful story about a baby with a hole in the heart who had her operation cancelled five times.
