Lauren Coffey is a pupil at Handford Hall County Primary in Ipswich, Suffolk. She was nine years old when she wrote the poem. Her teacher is John Lynch. The poem won a major award in the 1993 W H Smith Young Writers Competition and is published in the anthology, My Hand is Elastic, published last week by Pan Macmillan ( pounds 4.99). Barry Turrell's poem 'Lauren' will be published tomorrow.
