Born in Devon, Patricia Beer went to Exeter University, and St Hilda's, Oxford. She taught in Italy for seven years and in 1964 returned to Devon. Patricia Beer will be Poet of the Month on BBC Radio 3 during June. Previous collections include Friend of Heraclitus (Carcanet, 1993). This poem is from her Collected Poems published by Carcanet at pounds 6.95. It is the second of a series on the theme of summer to be featured in The Daily Poem this week.
