Britain experienced the coldest night of the year as temperatures in the Scottish highlands dropped to -11C, as weather conditions affected travellers when a plane veered off the runway at Inverness.

The Flybe plane from Manchester landed at the airport in northern Scotland at 10am, but on touching down veered off the tarmac and onto the grass.

There were 47 passengers believed to be on board at the time but none were reported injured. The temperatures in the Scottish highlands dropped well below freezing last night, with Amber warnings issued by the Met Office yesterday.

More low temperatures were predicted this evening, with forecasters warning that parts of England could see -7C, and much of Scotland, the eastern coast of north England, Wales and Devon remaining under a weather warning.

MeteoGroup Forecaster Toby Tobler warned: "It's going to be very cold again tonight, certainly below zero pretty much everywhere. Temperatures could be minus 3C or 4C in England and Wales and in Scotland we could see minus 10C.

"There's a front coming through Tuesday and Wednesday which might bring some snow, mostly in northern parts of the country. Parts of England could get snow but it won't be huge amounts."

Loch Glascarnoch, Scotland, measured the coldest temperature at -11.2C, and Glaswegians woke this morning to find their city being gently cover by snow as low temperatures are predicted to continue.

Icy conditions, as well as patches of freezing fog, were predicted across the affected areas, with forecasters warning motorists to be aware of potentially dangerous driving conditions.

Icy conditions this morning closed the northbound carriage of the A24 West Sussex for more than an hour after a van overturned and seven cars slid off the road. Two men, both in their twenties, suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

Yesterday, police in Devon and Cornwall dealt with 21 crashes in two hours yesterday as conditions deteriorated.

The previous coldest temperature was -9C in the Highland village of Cromdale, but the chilly weather failed to surpass the freezing -15C felt in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, in 2012.
