UK weather set to brighten up after bank holiday weekend, but rain will return tomorrow

After a dry bank holiday for many, forecasters are predicting rain will soon return.

After a disappointing start to the holiday for many, most of Britain will enjoy a more settled bank holiday Monday, with respite from the showers of the weekend.

But the break will not last with fresh rain and even thunder forecast for later in the week.

Met Office forecaster Charles Powell said the bank holiday Monday is predicted to be “completely different” with temperatures warming up to 15C (59F) in the north with “hardly any rain”.

Mr Powell said: “The bank holiday (weekend) has been mixed, but today many places will see some decent weather."

Snow fell over the Highlands of Scotland over the weekend, prompting severe weather warnings, while torrential downpours of up to three inches of rain hit some areas of the country.

Most of the UK was hit by rain at some point in the last few days but, between the showers, spells of warm sunshine sent temperatures climbing to 20C (68F) in the south east of England yesterday - higher than average for this time of year.

Mr Powell suggested that the country had been hit by a north-south divide, with the south getting the better of the weather yesterday.

He said: ”We had some snow in the Highlands of Scotland and had a snow warning out. It is early May, it is not impossible to see snow, but it is quite late in the season.

“It would have been pretty nasty conditions out there for walkers. There would have been near zero visibility, so the warning was there.”

“It has been a mixed bag. It has by no means been a wash-out but some people will have been disappointed with the bank holiday weather. But everyone would have managed to go out and enjoy something.”

The unpredictable weather will strike again though, with showers forecast for Tuesday and thunder expected to return on Wednesday.

Brighter weather will return at the end of the week, the Met Office said.

Mr Powell said: “It is all over the place, but temperatures won't dip too much. It is very mixed but the end of the week looks better than the start.”
