From the Ice Bucket Challenge to the Kylie Jenner Lip challenge viral trends have taken the internet by storm and now a new online craze is inundating social media.

The condom challenge, in which water-filled condoms are dropped on to peoples' heads leading to a phenomenon dubbed “fishbowl face”, is the latest stunt to sweep the online world.

The craze reportedly began in Japan with a video uploaded in mid-November entitled “Japanese Condom Head Challenge”.

When supposedly done correctly the condom forms a globe of water around the person's head and pops when touched.

The original video currently has over 260,000 views on YouTube and has spawned a flood of imitations on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.

The craze even has its own Twitter account and hashtag - #condomchallenge - and echoes a previous craze from 2013 in which people posted videos of themselves pulling condoms from their noses.

The reason behind the trend is unclear, however some are suggesting it is promoting sex safe.

However, the craze has sparked safety concerns and warnings of suffocation when in some cases the latex becomes trapped around people's faces, cutting off their air supply.

Despite this many seem willing to brave suffocation as comments about the challenge on social media have risen into the tens of thousands in a matter of days.
