A young girl wears a photo of Benedict XVI in her a head-dress as she waits for the Pope to conduct a huge open-air Mass yesterday.

The pontiff led tens of thousands of Catholics in a panoply of African tongues during the service at Benin's national soccer stadium, ending a pilgrimage in which he laid out his spiritual vision for the continent of Africa. Many worshippers, who began queueing at 3am, did not make it inside and knelt in a car park to pray. AP
