Egypt knife attack: Two tourists killed and four injured at popular Red Sea beach resort

The attacker has been arrested and is being interrogated to determine his motives, Egypt’s Interior Ministry says

Two tourists have been killed and four others wounded after a knife attack at an Egyptian Red Sea resort in Hurghada.

The attacker has been arrested and is currently being interrogated to determine his motives, Egypt’s Interior Ministry said.

Security officials said the tourists who died were two German women. Three of the injured were from Serbia and one from Poland.

An official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the attacker stabbed his victims in the face, neck and feet – though this has yet to be verified.

Initial investigations appear to show that the man gained access to the resort by swimming from a nearby beach.

Hurghada stretches for 25 miles of Egypt’s Red Sea coast and is a well-known tourist hub with a range of bars, nightclubs, resorts and restaurants.

The attack came hours after five policemen were shot dead in Cairo’s twin city of Giza, when suspected Islamist militants opened fire on their vehicle early in the morning.

Three gunmen on a motorbike attacked police in the al-Badrasheen area in the latest attack on Egyptian security forces battling an Islamist insurgency.

No group had taken responsibility for the attack but security forces in Egypt have been battling a local affiliate of Isis.
