Former South African President Nelson Mandela has not returned home, and is still in hospital, the country's presidency has told a South African news agency.

It had been reported that Mr Mandela had returned to his home in Johannesburg.

The statement said: "Madiba is still in hospital in Pretoria, and remains in a critical but stable condition. At times his condition becomes unstable, but he responds to medical interventions."

Mr Mandela was admitted to hospital in Pretoria on 9 June with a recurring lung infection, and spent his 95th birthday there on 18 July. The last official statement on his health came on 24 August when his condition was given as "critical but stable".
