Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, made her public debut on the cover of Vanity Fair and is receiving support from the Kardashians, Hollywood and LGBT groups.

In the same hour, ESPN announced Ms Jenner, the former Olympic gold medalist, would receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs. According to ESPN the honour rewards "strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost."

Jay Brown, Director of Research and Public Education at the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, told The Independent that Ms Jenner's moment highlights the importance of visibility for transgender rights.

"This incredible moment of visibility gives hope to many, including many transgender youth, who before the last couple of years saw very few examples of themselves and their stories reflected in the national media,” he said. “Caitlin Jenner clearly understands the importance of visibility and her brave and very public steps are inspiring to us all.”

Mr Brown also said that it's important to remember at this moment that transgender people — especially transgender women of color — face high rates of violence, unemployment and harassment.

"By her actions and the actions of others before her, Jenner is helping open the door to better understanding and inclusion. Now it’s our responsibility to help ensure that all transgender people have the opportunity to walk through that door.”

Meanwhile, her family provided her overwhelming support on Twitter.

Hollywood and her fans also congratulated Ms Jenner on the unveiling of her shoot.
