Harvey Weinstein is currently in a Manhattan hospital instead of prison following his conviction for sexual assault and third-degree rape.

The former movie mogul was due to end Monday at New York’s violence-plagued Rikers Island jail complex but was rerouted to Bellevue Hospital.

His attorney Donna Rotunno told CNN he was complaining of chest pains, heart palpitations and high blood pressure.

Weinstein’s representative told The Independent that the former producer should be going to Rikers once he’s deemed in good enough health.

Bellevue Hospital has a special ward for treating jail inmates.

The facility would offer a sharp contrast with the Four Seasons hotel where Weinstein began his day shortly before the verdict was announced, for a breakfast meeting with his lawyers.

Weinstein’s attorneys had asked that Weinstein, 67, be sent to the jail’s North Infirmary Command – two dank buildings that house sick inmates and those with enough notoriety to require protection from their neighbours.

A lawyer for Weinstein reminded Judge James Burke on Monday of some of her client’s ailments, noting he takes several medications and requires injections in his eyes to forestall blindness. He entered and left the Manhattan court each day leaning on a walker – a remnant, according to his lawyers, of back surgery he had in December.

Weinstein’s bail was revoked and he was handcuffed shortly after the jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and raping another woman in 2013. He has maintained his innocence and a long appeals battle is likely.
