President’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump launches ‘real news’ video to list his ‘accomplishments’

‘I bet you haven’t heard about all the accomplishments the president had this week because there’s so much fake news out there’

Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law has launched a “real news” video on the President’s official Facebook page, listing his achievements from the past week and positive stories, while omitting news that has gained negative coverage.

Lara Trump, who is married to the president’s first son, Eric, welcomes viewers at the start of the two-and-a-half minute video by saying: “I bet you haven’t heard about all the accomplishments the president had this week because there’s so much fake news out there.”

Ms Trump promises to give “a glimpse” of the president’s activities for the past week, including his decision to donate the second-quarter of his salary to the Department of Education, the news that the US unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest point since 2001, and the claim that there have been nearly 800,000 jobs created in America since Mr Trump came into office.

Ms Trump also said her father-in-law this week gave the medal of valour at the White House to those who helped to save lives during the congressional baseball shooting. She reported that he also visited veterans in Ohio, while Vice President Mike Pence visited Walter Reed hospital to speak to wounded soldiers.

The news listed by Ms Trump had actually been reported by the media. She called the claim that unemployment has dropped to its lowest rate since 2001 “quite an incredible fact”, though it is not an achievement that can be credited solely to the president. Unemployment has been falling steadily since 2009 as the recession ended, according to the New York Times.

The video ends with Ms Trump saying: “Thanks for joining us everybody, I’m Lara Trump and that is the real news.”

The video, posted on Sunday, did not mention the turmoil seen inside the White House in the days before, during which former communications director Anthony Scaramucci went on the record in an expletive-ridden vent against White House leaks, the then-chief of staff Reince Priebus and Steve Bannon. It did not carry the news of Mr Priebus being ousted and General John Kelly taking over as chief of staff.

The report additionally omitted news of the president’s decision to ban transgender people from serving in the military, which has been condemned by 56 former generals and admirals, and of his defeat over the Obamacare repeal in the Senate.
