A man who allegedly tried to rob a woman ended up in a choke hold on the floor – after it turned out she was an MMA fighter.

The alleged would-be robber attempted to attack mixed martial arts champion Monique Bastos and a friend in the western Brazilian state of Maranhão, it has been claimed.

Wesley Sousa de Araujo and another man had earlier approached Ms Bastos and her friend on a motorbike and reportedly returned to threaten the two women unless they handed over their mobile phones in the incident in the city of Açailândia, MailOnline reported.

In a video of the incident captured by a bystander, Mr de Araujo is reported by MailOnline to be saying: “Daddy, daddy, call the police, daddy. Help Jesus. I swear, it was the first time I've ever done this. Help, Lord, somebody help me.

“Where's my mum?”

Ms Bastos, who is a six time MMA champion, told MMAfighting.com that this is not the first time something like this has happened: "I’ve been through this a few times before, and it’s the second time I fought back.

Talking about a previous attack when she was still training, she said: "There were two guys, and they were using knives, but I was able to use my jiu-jitsu and get my phone back. It’s a huge risk, but I did it to defend myself and my friends, so I used what I learned."

During this attack she realised they were not armed and lifted the rear wheel of the motorbike causing both men to fall to the ground: "The guy who took my phone ran away, but I was able to get the other one."

Mr de Araujo was taken to a local police and has denied trying to rob the women.

The "lion killer"- or rear naked choke - is a choke hold in Brazilian jiu-jitsu where the attacker wraps his or her arms around their opponent's neck and places their elbow on the opponent’s windpipe.
