A paramedic, who fell in love with a woman whose life he saved, has surprised his now-girlfriend by proposing in front of thousands of people at a baseball game.

Cameron Hill was called to save Melissa Dohme after her violent ex-boyfriend stabbed her 32 times in the face and neck in 2012.

Mr Hill said that despite the fact he couldn't see her face for blood and he didn’t know her name, he had a feeling they would meet again.

During her harrowing ordeal, Ms Dohme was hospitalised for three weeks, was pumped with 12 units of blood, suffered a stroke which made it hard for her to balance, and was left with paralysis on one side of her face, Mail Online reported.

Against all odds, Ms Dohme emerged from hospital able to speak and walk again, despite doctors’ fears.

Driven by her recovery, Ms Dohme returned to university and was determined to raise awareness of domestic violence.

Some nine months after the brutal attack, Mr Hill and another paramedic who saved her attended a speech she was giving at a church.

Describing the emotional moment she was reunited with Mr Hill, said told the Tampa Bay Times: “I was weirdly giddy. I had this feeling about him.”

Despite their initial apprehensions, the pair soon began dating.

The heart-warming proposal saw Ms Dohme preparing to throw the first pitch at the Tampa Bay Rays game against the Yankees at the Tropicana Field in Florida on Monday.

A video of the tear-jerking moment shows Mr Hill walk out to the pitch and hand Ms Dohme the baseball.

But when he nervously drops to his knee, Ms Dohme sees a message reading "Will You Marry Me" on the ball and the ring in his hand and gasps, before accepting his proposal.

Dohme's attacker, Robert Lee Burton Jr, was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2013.
