People across Brazil gathered to celebrate the National Day of Samba. The traditional dance is considered Brazil's national rhythm and can be traced to Brazil's slave trade from West Africa. Pedra do Sal is a historic venue for Brazilians of African descent and is known as the birthplace of samba in Rio de Janeiro. The site was formerly a large slave market.
