Donald Trump’s odds of becoming US President improve due to slight lead in Florida

Ladbrokes has already priced up the 2020 election

Donald Trump is being heavily backed again as he builds up an impressive lead in Florida.

Hilary Clinton had looked home and hosed with her price in to 1-8.

But as the Republican started to nose ahead, his price roared in from 9-2 to 15-8 with Ladbrokes.

Other bookmakers similarly slashed his price. Hilary Clinton by contrast drifted to 4-11.

The electoral college still favours the Democrat. Trump could in theory win Ohio, Florida and North Carolina and still fail to make the 270 votes he needs to win a majority in the electoral college that picks the Presidency.

The Florida count still awaits the result in heavily Democratic counties in the South of the state, but Trump was performing well in swing counties. Punters took note and laid down their money.

Ladbrokes has already priced up the 2020 election, making her the 6-4 favourite to win a second term. Her vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine is the 8-1 second favourite. He would be a leading candidate if Clinton fails to see out her term or doesn’t stand again.

Among Republicans, Marco Rubio is the favourite, with odds of 12-1 to win. A second Donald Trump bid is priced at 25-1, while Michelle Obama can be backed at 66-1. Mike Pence, Trump’s vice presidential nominee, can be backed at 20-1.

Ladbrokes head of political betting Matt Shaddick said: “Clinton would enter the White House as the most unpopular incoming president ever. We thinks its odds against her winning a second term.

“We think Marco Rubio can bounce back from his primary defeats this year and be a leading player in the 2020 race now he looks to have won back his senate seat.”
