Don Jr complains about ‘being cancelled’ and says he’s losing thousands of supporters every day

Donald Trump Jr has complained about being “cancelled” a “couple of times a day” and claimed that he is losing thousands of social media followers.

Speaking at the right-wing pro-Trump student organisation Turning Point USA’s conference in Florida on Saturday, Mr Trump Jr, 42, gave a rambling nearly 30-minute speech, speaking about 3 November's election and “liberal privilege”.

During his speech, Mr Trump Jr made numerous false claims about November’s election results and President-elect Joe Biden’s cognitive capabilities, ironically saying: “the guy can’t conform a complete sentence.”

President Donald Trump’s eldest son has made several false claims about Mr Biden and 2020’s national election over the past few months. He has parroted his father’s baseless claims that there was widespread fraud in favour of the Democrats on 3 November.

Mr Trump Jr went on to say that “no one is fighting for the truth,” as the “media are cheerleaders for the left”, before he claimed that he is regularly cancelled on social media.

While speaking about his book Liberal Privilege, Mr Trump Jr told the audience: “At this point you kind of know me well enough - it’s like if I’m not cancelled a couple of times a day I get worried”.

He added jokingly: “They must be plotting something really big if they haven’t been cancelling me all day.”

Mr Trump Jr then spoke about a recent visit to Alaska with his son, where he joked that they engaged in “some toxic masculine stuff” and went without WiFi for a week.

He said that while he was away he did not post on social media much, but told the crowd: “It doesn’t matter, Instagram’s been screwing me so badly anyway.

“No seriously, I’m getting like 20 per cent of what I got because I’m willing to fight until they shut me down. I’m averaging like 35,000 likes a post last couple of weeks. A month ago it was 250,000.”

Mr Trump Jr then claimed without evidence: “I actually have engagement that’s almost like 100 million a week, and I’m losing 2,000 followers a day. Think about that. It means that only those who want to actually follow me are remotely seeing my stuff.”

His comments on Saturday were not the first time he claimed that social media platforms were silencing his posts.

In October, just two weeks before November’s presidential election, Mr Trump Jr took to Instagram and posted a short video of himself lying down on his bed complaining about the lack of interaction on his posts.

“Hey guys hope you’re doing well. Just watching my algorithm get crushed. I guess I did something to p**s off the Instagram gods,” the president’s son said.

Mr Trump Jr captioned the video: “In IG jail. Watching my post get about 20 per cent of what they were getting last week so if you want turn on post notifications that way maybe you’ll at least see my stuff.”

His Instagram video came a few hours after he claimed on Twitter that the social media platform was limiting the reach of his posts.

He tweeted: “Twitter has been throttling my reach and I’m getting 1/3 the amount of RTs I would normally get. Instagram is doing the same & worse for the last few days.”

Mr Trump Jr has repeatedly been critical of Twitter for removing or labelling posts that the social media company deems to be spreading misinformation, but did not supply evidence for his claims in October or on Saturday.

Twitter has labelled several of his posts over the last two months for making false claims and spreading misinformation about 3 November’s election, as he has repeatedly said that Democrats engaged in widespread fraud.

Mr Biden won the presidential election by 306 to 232 electoral college votes, and received 7 million more ballots nationally than Mr Trump. His victory is expected to be confirmed by Congress on 6 January.
