Donald Trump says that he doesn’t have time for watching television, even while tweeting clips of shows with coverage he approves of.

Mr Trump took to the social media platform in the morning to defend his son, Donald Trump Jr, amid a scandal that has rocked Washington.

After retweeting a video of “Fox and Friends” where the hosts discussed the Senate’s decision to delay the August recess to work on a healthcare overhaul, and after applauding his son’s TV appearance the night before, Mr Trump claimed that the White House was “functioning perfectly” and that his focus on policy issues leaves him with few spare moments to watch television.

“The W.H. is functioning perfectly, focused on HealthCare, Tax Cuts/Reform & many other things,” he wrote. “I have very little time for watching T.V.”

The tweet appears aimed at reports that the White House had been thrust into chaos following the scandal surrounding his son. Mr Trump Jr, after a series of reports from the New York Times over the weekend detailing a meeting between himself and a Kremlin-connected lawyer, tweeted copies of his emails that showed the Russian government was interested in helping Mr Trump’s 2016 political campaign.

The President has defended his son against the allegations that those emails show collusion, and said that he did nothing wrong.

“My son Donald did a good job last night,” Mr Trump tweeted. “He was open, transparent and innocent. This is the greatest Witch Hunt in political history. Sad!”

Mr Trump may have curbed his television appetite lately, but he is well known for his affinity for the medium. It has been said that he watches more TV than any president before him. He is certainly the most reactive to cable news programming, and will frequently tweet about coverage he was just watching at all hours of the day.

He tweets so often about what he’s seeing on TV that reporters have been able to determine regular viewing patterns. “Fox and Friends” has been a mainstay, as was “Morning Joe” previously when he was on better terms with those hosts.
