Mark Carney tells Trump Canada is 'not for sale'

President Donald Trump and newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney came face-to-face at the White House on Tuesday for a high-stakes meeting.

Just days after winning an election campaign with an aggressive focus on Trump, Carney said he would make a bid for a comprehensive deal on trade and national security, while hoping to reset frayed U.S.-Canada relations.

Trump, meanwhile, played the upper hand, claiming the U.S. doesn’t need ‘anything’ from Canada except ‘friendship,’ but Canada needs ‘everything’ from the U.S.

The high-stakes meeting between the two leaders is set against the backdrop of Trump’s repeated threats to annex Canada and the imposition of sweeping 25 percent tariffs.

During their Oval Office meeting, Trump once again said he would like to see Canada become the 51st state.

But, Carney pushed back, saying Canada is “not for sale” and “won’t be for sale, ever.” He reiterated that Canadians will never change their mind about joining the U.S.

“Never say never,” Trump responded.

Carney mouthed the words “never” to the press.

Supreme Court allows Trump administration to ban transgender members of military for now

The U.S. Supreme Court said on Tuesday it would allow the Trump administration to move forward with its ban on transgender members of the military while litigation continues.

In a 6-3 order, the conservative justices of the court sided with the Trump administration, temporarily. The administration had asked the court to intervene after a federal judge paused the policy from taking effect.

The liberal justices of the court said they dissented.

The policy, which was unveiled in February, disqualifies any person from the military with “gender dysphoria” or those who have “undergone medical interventions for gender dysphoria.”

In their argument, the government claimed that people with gender dysphoria conflicted with the military’s values.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation called Tuesday’s ruling, “a devastating blow to transgender servicemembers who have demonstrated their capabilities and commitment to our nation's defense.”

Carney says he had a 'constructive' meeting with Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he and President Donald Trump had “wide-ranging and very constructive discussions” about the future of the U.S. and Canada’s economic partnership.

“I conveyed to the president today what our countries have long proven to be true: that Canada and the United States are stronger when we work together. We can get a better deal for our work, we can create more opportunities for our businesses, we can create stronger economies across North America,” Carney said during a press conference.

While taking questions from reporters, Carney said he feels better about the U.S.–Canada relationship after the meeting.

When asked how he mentally responded to Trump’s threats about annexing Canada and speaking badly about his predecessor, Carney said he is focused on the future, not the past.

Trump tease 'big announcement'

During his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump teased that a “very, very big announcement” would be coming soon but declined to give specific details.

“We will have a very, very big announcement to make. Like as big as it gets. And I won’t tell you on what,” Trump said.

The president insisted the news was “positive” but did not explain what topic it would be on or when he would make the announcement.

On Truth Social, the president once again emphasized “a big announcement – coming soon.”

Analysis: Carney played nice — then Trump delivered the insult he’d been planning all along

This was like trying to fix a microwave by hugging it — and Carney did his level best. But the press conference between the two leaders was a reminder that even when you make a show of taking Trump seriously, the president doesn’t like to play nice, writes Holly Baxter

Trump administration wanted Ukraine to take deportees: report

Earlier this year, the Trump administration urged the Ukrainian government to accept an unspecified number of deportees, who may have been citizens of other countries, as the war-torn country continues to fight Russia, according to The Washington Post.

In documents obtained by The Post, a senior U.S. diplomat relayed to a Ukrainian official that the U.S. was asking to send other nationals to the country despite it fighting an active war and not having a functioning airport.

There is not indicated that Ukraine seriously considered the proposal. Two Ukrainian officials familiar with the matter told The Post that the suggestion never reached the government’s highest levels.

A Ukrainian diplomat reportedly told U.S. counterparts that the government would only respond once it developed a position on the matter, but said that it was amid “wartime exigencies.”

Ukraine has not accepted any third-country nationals.

The State Department told The Post its “ongoing engagement with foreign governments” is “vital to deterring illegal and mass migration and securing our borders.”

Trump insinuates Russia's removal from G8 led to invasion of Ukraine

While taking questions from reporters during a meeting with the 2026 FIFA World Cup task force, President Donald Trump insinuated that Russia’s removal from the former G8 may have led to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine and subsequent war.

Trump claimed that former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and former president Barack Obama headed the decision to remove Russia from what was the G8 in 2014.

“They voted Russia out, and I say if they didn’t, which I thought was a very foolish decision because it’s a group of people sitting around a table, I’ve done it many times with him and you get to know him,” Trump began.

“If it was the G8, if Russia were in it, I think you probably wouldn’t have this ridiculous, deadly war going on right now,” Trump added.

Russia was removed from the G8 after it invaded and annexed Crimea, which was part of Ukraine.

“I think if Russia were in, they threw ‘em out, and because of that, maybe, millions of people are dying,” Trump said.

The president also said he was unaware Russia was banned from playing the World Cup.
