President Donald Trump delivered a major speech from the White House balcony after inviting a reported 2,000 attendees to his first in-person event since it was revealed he tested positive for Covid-19.

His second TV debate with rival Joe Biden has been cancelled, however, after the president refused to participate.

Meanwhile, Dr Deborah Birx, one of the nation’s leading physicians, said Covid-19 was now spreading among Americans at social events — including family gatherings — where people are “taking their mask off and letting down their guard”.

Six years ago, Colorado Democrats failed to convince enough voters to reject Cory Gardner s bid for the U.S. Senate. Their warnings that the Republican could, someday, be the confirming vote for a Supreme Court justice who could overturn Roe v. Wade proved ineffective.

Now Gardner, 46, is poised to be one of the votes that places President Donald Trump s nominee Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court just before the election. And Democrats think they have the votes to punish him for it.

Trump to speak ‘very briefly’

White House director of communications Alyssa Farah has said Trump’s speech later today will be a “shorter event”.

She told reporters the president’s team would be taking precautions and those attending will be screened when they arrive.

She added: “The president’s at a great distance; he’s going to be up on the balcony and very briefly address the supporters there."

At least one person who attended Donald Trump’s rally in Minnesota last month is in an intensive care unit after contracting Covid-19.

Minnesota health officials said nine people who attended the rally have since contracted the disease responsible for more than 210,000 deaths in the United States this year. They could not definitively pinpoint the in-person event as the site where the nine people became infected.

‘Peaceful law and order protest’

The White House has described Trump’s event planned for later today as “a peaceful protest for law and order”.

The president is expected to make remarks from a White House balcony to a crowd of hundreds on the lawn below this afternoon.

The White House did not preview the remarks that Trump will deliver, but he campaigned on a law-and-order theme throughout a summer of protests for racial justice.

A federal appeals court has ruled against the Trump administration’s attempt to deny citizenship to one of two twins born overseas to a gay married couple.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco concluded on Friday that an earlier decision by a Los Angeles trial judge should stand and that four-year-old Ethan Dvash-Banks is an American citizen.

White House coronavirus response task force member warns of ‘very different’ Covid-19 spread

A member of the White House coronavirus response task force and one of the nation’s leading doctors warned a “very different” coronavirus spread was underway across the US than the one the country faced during the initial months of the global pandemic.

The United States was experiencing a “very different” spread of the novel coronavirus in recent months than the wave of infections that swept over the country during the initial months of the global pandemic, a member of the White House coronavirus response task force has warned.

Dr Deborah Birx, one of the nation’s leading physicians, said Covid-19 was now spreading among Americans at social events — including family gatherings — where people are “taking their mask off and letting down their guard”.
