A 23-year-old woman has died on a flight from London to the US, it has been reported.

The woman, who was believed to be travelling alone, was on a transatlantic United Airlines flight from Heathrow, which landed at Newark Liberty International Airport, in New Jersey, yesterday evening.

Port Authority spokesman Joe Pentangelo told NorthJersey.com the woman was found unconscious on the flight before she was pronounced dead at 8.30pm (1.30am GMT). According to Mr Pentangelo, the woman reportedly had pre-existing medical problems.

A United Airlines spokesman told The Independent: "United confirms that a passenger passed away on flight UA115 from London Heathrow to New York/Newark on December 1, 2014.

"We offer our condolences to the passenger’s family. For privacy reasons, it would not be appropriate for us to comment further."

According to reports, a doctor attempted to assist the woman, understood to be from Newark, New Jersey, but she failed to recover.

A medical examiner and police were waiting at the airport when Flight 115 arrived on Monday evening, Associated Press has reported.

Authorities have not yet announced the cause of death.

Newark Liberty International Airport is situated in the city limits of both Newark and Elizabeth, in New Jersey, and is roughly 15 miles south west of Midtown Manhattan.
