Mumbai has been paralysed and more than 1200 have died after the heaviest rains to hit India in years.

The flooding may be the worst to hit the city in a decade, but many in the city are opening their doors to displaced people and advertising their help via social media.

Using #RainHosts, Mumbai's good samaritans have been offering safe and dry shelter to victims of the flooding.

One data-minded Mumbaikar went as far as to compile a spreadsheet compiling all the various locations where help is available:

The efforts of the populace to support one another drew praise from the Mumbai police, who called the phenomenon "sunshine on a rainy day."

"Together, we can overcome any ordeal," the Mumbai Police tweeted. "Thank you all for showing what humanity is in the face of adversity!"
