A teenager was burned alive by her ex-boyfriend and his father after ending her relationship, Indian police have said.

A father and son have been arrested on suspicion of murder after allegedly beating the 18-year-old before dousing her in kerosene and setting her alight.

The woman died on Sunday of severe burns at a hospital in Banswara district in the western state of Rajasthan, it was reported.

She was attacked as she went to a shop in her village on Saturday evening, according to Indian newspaper The Tribune.

"She was attacked by the father-son duo and later burnt alive," local police officer Manish Charan told AFP.

The victim, who worked in a cloth mill, suffered serious burns across 70 per cent of her body.

She was able to tell police what happened before she died and said her former boyfriend had poured the kerosone. She did not know who set her alight.

The woman's family reportedly said her ex-boyfriend had stalked her after she broke up with him.

Women in India are nearly 40 times more likely die of an assault than American women, a study published this month found.

Only one in four Indian female victims of domestic violence seeks treatment, researchers said.

Protests at violence against women have erupted across the country in recent years following high-profile cases of rape and murder.
