A young boy swims among floating debris, trying to salvage his belongings. Tropical Storm Saola hit the Philippines capital Manila yesterday, sweeping two barges into an informal settler area of the city.

At least three people were killed and millions were left without power. Heavy rains, tornado-type winds and thunderstorms have pounded large parts of the Philippines, the government said. The storm is thought to be moving towards Taiwan.
