Bishops back sex-case cardinal
US Catholic bishops threw their full support behind Chicago's Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, accused by a former seminarian of sexual abuse, Reuter reports from Washington. The National Catholic Bishops' Conference opened its annual meeting with a prolonged standing ovation for Cardinal Bernardin. Arbishop William Keeler praised the cardinal for his integrity and said, 'We express our complete confidence in his ultimate vindication'.
