A cataclysmic sandstorm dubbed by local people 'the black wind' killed at least 43 people, most of them children, and devastated the agriculture of north-west China, Reuter reports from Hong Kong.
Most of the victims were drowned after being blown into water channels and pools. 'It whipped up sand and pebbles, turning day as black as night, tore up trees by the roots and blew down power cables, cutting off electricity supplies,' the China News Service said.
