Burma's rulers lift curfew

RANGOON (Reuter) - Burma's military rulers have lifted a night curfew that has been in force since they put down a national campaign for democracy in 1988.

The state-owned Working People's Daily yesterday printed an official order on its front page lifting the curfew because the ruling generals said the security situation had improved.

The people of Burma have been banished from the streets between 11pm and 4am since 18 September 1988, when the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) took power. Thousands of people were killed in 1988 when the armed forces suppressed pro-democracy demonstrations.
