Hundreds of protesters surrounded a regional governor’s residence to demand his resignation after a night of rioting in which cars and buildings were set ablaze.
Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowds in the town of Ismaili, about 125 miles north-west of the capital, Baku.
Several protesters and police were injured in the riots, which started as a road-rage brawl.
